For this image, it appears that the shadow falls on the model on only one side. I like to imagine that the skull makeup only is on the left side of his face as well. The way one side is well lit and white as opposed to the shadow, the makeup, and the glove on the right hand creates a symbolic contrast. In a way, it reminds me of the Batman villain Two Face. On a more serious note, it seems to represent that anybody, even men in snazzy dress clothes, can have a second side, a dark side, or, rather, a second face.
