Intangible Word assignment: Matthew Phillips

"WANDERLUST"
Aperture: F 4.5
Shutter Speed: 1/800
ISO: 800

Description:
An old brick building covered with vines, an old unused window. To me, this image is imaginable almost anywhere in the world, and through it I can travel far far away from dreary Grand Rapids, to an abandoned mansion shrouded in mystery somewhere in Tuscany, Italy on a foggy day.

  "LEGACY"
Aperture: F 4.5
Shutter Speed: 8 sec.
ISO: 3200

Description:
I would be lying if I said that some part of me wasn't bitter about the cancellation of the journalism program at Cornerstone and end end of the campus newspaper The Herald. I haven't been here long, but I've found a home with The Herald. Now it is going away. The proverbial door is closing on the Herald and all that it has done, now to be forgotten in the darkness, as its dusk ever approaches.

Intangible Word Assignment

The first word is Serenity. I tried to capture this by using a black void to bring peace and quiet to the light in the photograph.

The second word is Chaos. I attempted to capture this feeling by capturing a drawing that has promise, but is overrun with the chaotic scribbling of a juvenile.

The rule of thirds is used in this photo because the dog's head is on two intersecting lines. You'll notice that I put the dog in focus, with the back ground out of focus to also play with the theme "focused". The dog is focused on something, but the photo does not show what, so it creates more interest and makes the dog's head a focal point. Also, there's good contrast between lights and darks in this picture.

Word: Hallucination
ISO: 200
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
Aperture: f/2.8

Leading lines was the main element in this picture. The trees are surrounding the subject and the smoke is coming from the subject's head as well. I think the colors in this photo pull the viewers in because there are a majority of neutral colors with a popping blue coming from the subject. The darkness of the photo was intentional for the theme of "hallucination".. To make things more mysterious. Also, rule of thirds is shown where the subjects head lays on the bottom line of thirds. Hallucination: an experience involving the apparent perception of something not present. Obviously, the subject is hallucinating. She is alone and sees smoke.

                                                                              Pain
the photo is supposed to show pain, and how you can hid your pain form everyone else around you however you will always be able to see your own pain not matter what. I used a slower shutter speed to make two people to show someone looking at themselves

This photo is to show the fast progress that we have made in this world & how easy it is to get around. I used a slow shutter speed to show the car's zooming by

CONTEMPLATION

In an effort to best portray the intangible word "contemplation," I made use of the compositional tool "rule of thirds." By placing the subject in the lower right, the viewer is able to see much of what he is looking at, therefore enabling the viewer to consider the idea that he is in deep thought.

Shutter Speed: 1/80
Aperture: f/5.0
ISO: 200

DETERMINATION

In an effort to best portray the intangible word "determination," I tried to make use of the compositional tool "leading lines." There are a lot of lines in this photo, and the majority of them lead your eye upward, which helps portray the word "determined" as there is often a goal in mind when someone is determined, and the fact that the subject looks as though he is moving toward where the lines lead helps depict that.

                                                            Injustice:

F/5.6  Shutter: 1/80 sec  ISO: 400

The three-year old in this image is pointing towards her older sister whom she felt 'wasn't being very nice.' We so often ignore injustice until it affects us and then we adamantly point fingers to prove we are in the right and someone or something else is unfair. What if we took this passion and directed it towards those who didn't have a voice, calling out injustice on behalf of others? We could make this world a much better place for everyone to live in.  You could see this image both ways. As a little girl complaining or of one protecting something which she has took on the responsibility of, such as the teddy bear and  complaining on its behalf.

                                                        Skeptical:

F/5.6 Shutter: 1/80 sec  ISO: 400

The ten-year old girl in this photo is entering a stage of 'coming to her own' in a sense. She is beginning to make her own choices about who she is, what she believes, who she agrees with or doesn't agree with and why. The photo is simple in that it focuses on her face, with a basic outdoor background so that you study her expression. Her eyes are looking directly at you but her face is turned away as though she isn't sure how she feels about you yet. She is smiling ever so slightly, as though withholding a secret opinion.

Restlessness
I attempted to use leading lines through the pills (slightly) and monster cans while also keeping a sort of contrast with the dark red and black plaid with the white pills and cans. I'll leave the meaning out for the next critique.

Power
Negative space was an integral part of this photo. I had the two people wear dark colors to add even more emptiness while also using a kind of selective focus because it takes your eyes away from the arms and more to the hands. If we want to stretch it, even more, we can say the arms act like leading lines of their own even if that wasn't the main intention.
