Project: “Real Genius” Movie
The
art piece I was inspired by was the slightly dated movie “Real Genius”. To sum
it up the movie is about a genius science student starting out as a freshman in
college. He is paired up with a fellow science whiz, who happens to be a
slacking senior, to work on a project with laser. They become friends through
their opposite attitudes and motivation levels. The young men discover that the
laser they are working is for the government and meant to be used for
destruction; after this fact rising to the surface they begin to second guess
everything they have been working for.
What
made me select this piece was because the plot of the movie was satisfying even
though it is slightly predictable. This is going to sound humorous, but hear me
out – I think the interpretation of this movie is the accuracy in actuality of
how college is in relation to the excited and motivated freshmen in contrast
with the procrastinating, unmotivated senior trudging along. I am not saying
professors are out to attack the world and using students as their minions
(lol), but what I am saying is that sometimes the work given to students can
seem unimportant, irrelevant, and unnecessary and in result of that the
professors like to watch us suffer. From a growing student’s perspective it is
a common thought especially in times of stress and disorder, but it is thanks
to our friends and study partners that help us achieve what needs to be done
and the various motivation levels mix together to create progress.
My
photograph is similar to the movie “Real Genius” as my selected piece because
the location is in a college dorm lounge; the technique I used is the point of
focus and made the backpack larger and added clarity to it and in the blurred
background I captured students studying together – their attire captures their
motivation but also determinedness; the papers strewn across the table and
their backpacks ready at hand on the chairs next to them. Meeting together to
study holds an accountability. Focusing on the backpack in the foreground shows
how much of an emphasis and importance school has, especially college, and how
tasking it is hours through the night. A difference is obvious – the students
are not working on a laser project for the government.
